Dancing and fine dining at the Tioga Inn was the talk of the town on Saturday nights. Young couples dressed in their finest, coming from all areas of Southeast Kansas to socialize. Much like today’s bars and clubs, the Tioga Inn, now known as Tioga Suites, created a carefree and happy get-a-way from the struggles of the 1930’s.
The idea of this hotel began a decade before the finished product. It started as a way to boost Chanute business by creating a social atmosphere with lodging accommodations. After drafts were completed, Dr. L.D. Johnson, Chase E. Brown, and N.S. Jones financed the construction; but a faltering economy halted the hotel project. Finally in 1928, two brothers, Milo and Hugh Jones and their cousin Neil took over. Construction was completed by architect John W. Pratt, who built many of Chanute’s historical buildings.
The Tioga Inn officially opened its doors in fall 1929 for a then, steep price of $218,000. “I’ve never seen such a coming together of the community, “said Betsey O’Neil, 95, when remembering the opening of the Tioga. “I remember as a child that building had everything; a beauty shop, restaurant, hotel rooms, and …a jewelry store. My daddy even bought his cigars there.”
The Tioga had private suites on the sixth floor, the newest technology and shops galore. Many of the city’s finest events were held in the second floor ballroom complete with fine food and service.
Within the last 50 years, the establishment has had its variety of owners, names, and renovations. From a turnover in ownership to Boss Hotels in 1949 and in 1988 a renovation into an assisted living residence by Westin Financial Groups, this building has many stories.
Much like nature, only the strongest survive. Though the assisted living residence was successful for years, it was pricey for many of Chanute’s older residents. In 2001, the Tioga was once again empty.
In recent years, the last business adventures have all reverted back to the beginning cause for the Tioga establishment. In 2004, Chiantis, a fine Italian restaurant brought in business from all areas of Kansas. The bar area was remodeled for cocktail parties and party rooms were created to host large events.
“It was fabulous to have great food and wine as a dinner option in Chanute,” said loyal customer, Cathy Taylor. Unfortunately, lack of business and funds caused a swap in ownership.
Though a tough transition of different chefs and owners, the building has been renamed Tioga Suites. By remodeling apartments to hotel rooms and creating a family dining atmosphere, the hotel portion and Main Street Family Restaurant has become extremely successful.
Main Street Family Restaurant provides home-style country breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Sunday brunch is the most popular event at the restaurant. Homemade desserts and cakes would give any Food Network pastry chef a run for his money. The most popular desserts are the “Strawberry Shortcake” and “Chocolate Turtle Cheesecake.” At night, the bar is a place for socializing and entertainment for adult population.
Owners Mohammed Gedi and Gemal Hamza have found the present day niche for this historical building in Chanute’s community. By providing find service, food, residence, and appealing night life, it seems that the Jones Brother’s basic idea for this hotel is here to stay. The Tioga has been nicknamed the “gem of Chanute, Kansas” and rightfully so. Through the many owners, businesses and people that walk through the doors, all are touched by the six story building.
